My Writings. My Thoughts.
This is the first release of the soundtrack to David Bowie’s 1976 cult film ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ which is coming to 2CD. The film itself reached cult status due to Bowie’s outstanding performance, and confirmed the film’s director Nic Roeg, and book’s author Walter Tevis, as champions of their respective fields. The music, highly celebrated but until now unavailable as a body of work, can now finally be acknowledged in its own light. The 2CD format will be released in September, earlier than the vinyl & boxset formats to coincide with the UK cinema re-release, also planned to be released in the US and Germany, more information to follow.

Erik Wøllo‘s classic album, Solstice, is reborn in this special remastered edition. Along with two previously unreleased tracks from the era, the album now sounds better than ever, with a depth and clarity that far surpass the original release. Solstice is an album with a pure, yet sophisticated electronic palette that features Wollo’s cinematic atmospheres at their finest. Melodic beauty adorns a solid rhythmic structure, and a sense of minimalism is present throughout the entire album. At times, the music incorporates rhythms and elements from around the world, including a remarkable performance by South Indian violin virtuouso L. Subramaniam on the track Northern Lights Alap. A must-have album for all who love ambient electronic music, Solstice is a landmark release from the golden age of Wøllo’s creative development.
Previously only available as part of an exclusive three-disc signed & numbered set, this special remastered edition is now available on its own as a single CD, and for the first time ever as a download in CD quality lossless, as well as 24-bit High Resolution Studio Master.
While the tragic passing of David Bowie in early 2016 still resonates loudly and remains one of the year’s saddest occasions, the time since has allowed for a re-assessment of Bowie’s life and work, the results of which have universally shown that this enigmatic musical and cultural pioneer had as big an impact on the world as anyone who ever stepped foot in the entertainment industry or artistic community. We have also been reminded of just how intelligent, spontaneous and articulate was the man born David Jones, and with this in mind, this CD/DVD pack celebrates Bowie’s remarkable skills, talents and expertise in this arena. Featuring both filmed and audio conversations and interviews with David Bowie, taken from events and occasions across his career, this double disc set will delight and enthral every last fan of ‘the man who fell to earth’.
The follow up to the awarding winning and critically acclaimed DAVID BOWIE FIVE YEARS (1969 1973) will be released on 23rd September and will contain the previously unreleased album from 1974 called THE GOUSTER .
The thirteen LP box features all of the material officially released by Bowie during the so-called American phase of his career from 1974 to 1976.
The box set, which is named after a track recorded in 1974 but not officially released until the 1990s, includes DIAMOND DOGS , DAVID LIVE (in original and 2005 mixes), YOUNG AMERICANS and STATION TO STATION (in original and 2010 mixes) as well as THE GOUSTER , LIVE NASSAU COLISEUM 76 and a new compilation entitled RE:CALL 2 which is a collection of single versions and non-album b-sides.
All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/vinyl/digital as well as new remasters.
Exclusive to the box set is THE GOUSTER previously unreleased as a complete album it was recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia in 1974 and produced by Tony Visconti. The album was mixed and mastered before David decamped to New York to work with John Lennon and Harry Maslin on what became the YOUNG AMERICANS album. THE GOUSTER contains three previously unreleased mixes of Right , Can You Hear Me and Somebody Up There Likes Me .
For the 2016 release, Tony Visconti has overseen the mastering from the original tapes and photos taken by Eric Stephen Jacobs have been put together for the sleeve based around one of David s original concepts for the album.
Also exclusive to the package is the remastered DAVID LIVE (original mix) , the 2010 Harry Maslin mix of STATION TO STATION (previously only available on an audio only DVD in 5.1 and stereo as part of the STATION TO STATION Deluxe box set in 2010) and RE:CALL 2 .
RE:CALL 2 features the original single mix of Rebel Rebel , which has only featured on a 40th anniversary picture disc in 2014 since its original release on single in 1974, and a previously unreleased on CD Australian single edit of Diamond Dogs , the only place in the world that this edit was issued. Also appearing on CD for the first time is the single edit of the live version of Rock n Roll With Me , which was issued to radio stations in the U.S. to help promote the DAVID LIVE album.
RE:CALL 2 features newly originated artwork with 1975 in-studio images from the STATION TO STATION recording sessions by David s friend and backing vocalist Geoff MacCormack aka Warren Peace.
The alternative cover for the 2010 mix of STATION TO STATION by Harry Maslin, features the originally intended colour sleeve for the album that never got further than a few colour proofs and was replaced by the more familiar black and white image.
The box sets accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Eric Stephen Jacobs, Tom Kelley, Geoff MacCormack, Terry O Neill, Steve Schapiro, and many others as well as historical press reviews and technical notes about the albums from producers Tony Visconti and Harry Maslin.

‘A Thousand Suns’
We were not making an album.
For months, we’d been destroying and rebuilding our band. The experiments that resulted filled the studio hard drive with diverse, abstract sounds. Amorphous echoes, cacophonous samples, and handmade staccato merged into wandering, elusive melody. Each track felt like a hallucination.
We didn’t know if any of those unorthodox ideas could be incorporated into a traditional album, but we knew we didn’t want our next album to be predictable. Sitting together in the same studio where we made our first album, all six of us voiced a commitment to going out on a limb, to making something truly daring. We asked ourselves: were we all earnestly willing, more than ever before, to abandon the precepts of commercial ambition in pursuit of what we believe to be honest art?
The inclination to begin writing conventional songs for a conventional album came and went. The temptation to adjust our creative vision to fulfill expectations beyond our studio walls yielded to the audacious ambition of what we hoped to achieve as a band. The two years of making ‘A Thousand Suns’ marked our exhilarating, surrealistic, and often challenging journey into the creative unknown.
On the eve of its completion, this body of work, assembled through unconscious inspiration and unmitigated exertion, has revealed to us notions both stirring and surprising. The album’s personified imagery is neither dogma nor political premeditation. The emergent themes and metaphors illuminate a uniquely human story.
‘A Thousand Suns’ grapples with the personal cycle of pride, destruction, and regret. In life, like in dreams, this sequence is not always linear. And, sometimes, true remorse penetrates the devastating cycle. The hope, of course, springs from the notion that the possibility of change is born in our most harrowing moments.
Enjoy the music.
