Welcome 2 Detroit Instrumentals [Vinyl]

// November 21st, 2017 // No Comments » // Daft Punk

Jay Dee needs no introduction. Widely regarded as the most important man in hip-hop along with Pete Rock and DJ Premier, and Dr. Dre. Having laced tracks and remixed for the likes of Janet Jackson, Daft Punk, Tribe Called Quest, Brand New Heavies, Busta Rhymes, Common, Erykah Badu, Guru, The Pharcyde, The Roots, De La Soul, Royce Da ’59……the list goes on and on. There is no questioning Jay Dees talents and abilities. Many have tried but can’t duplicate.

Jay Dee’s solo ”Welcome 2 Detroit”, was the first instalment of the Beat Generation, a series of producer led albums whereby the producer comes out from the shadows to have complete creative control to do what they’ve always wanted to do. Not only was it short-listed for the Artistic Achievement in Music October 2001 (the US equivalent to the Mercury Prize), but gave all to follow something to live up to.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the cult series, Beat Generation, BBE are re-releasing the instrumental version of the monumental ”Welcome 2 Detroit” on vinyl. This will open eyes to the complexity and effectiveness of Jay’s production skills. Leaving you hearing elements you may have missed on the vocal version.

Justice’s monster beats, massive hooks, thunderous drums, and near-religious determination to demolish dance floors cast them in a light no contemporary can catch. The group’s US debut single, “Waters Of Nazareth” arrived in 2006 and solidified their sound: huge slabs of beats, brutal strings, and cathartic release. That record sets the stage for this, their debut full-length, boasting the already ubiquitous disco pop anthem “D.A.N.C.E.”, which features the best English children’s choir since “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2”.Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number “D.A.N.C.E.” in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It’s ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it’s . This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor the Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to “Waters of Nazareth,” it’s very difficult to avoid wondering “how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully” while also dancing furiously. –Mike McGonigal

Yeezus [Explicit]

// June 23rd, 2017 // 2 Comments » // Daft Punk

This album has a long list of collaborators: Daft Punk, Hudson Mohawke, RZA, Chief Keef, King L, Justin Vernon, Travis Scott and Charlie Wilson all chipped in, and Rick Rubin showed up late in the game and got an executive producer credit. Full of rattling 808s, electro clatter, waves of fuzz and heart-racing BPMs. ‘On Site’, its high-voltage sequence of insistent electronic bleeps and blips interspersed with samples of what sounds like slow-motion epic classic rock songs. The heavy drum rumble of ‘Black Skinhead’, interspersed with yelps and shouts, West raps in an increasingly frantic manner, building into a climax that the Prodigy would be proud of “I Am a God”. The drum-less barrage of brooding synths, booming pitched-down vocals and smoke-gray reverb sounds like something out of a boss level in Assassin’s Creed. “New Slaves” is still as electric as the day it was premiered on the sides of buildings across the globe, a snarling indictment of America’s interwoven legacies of consumerism, racism and mass incarceration.

Graduation is the 3rd installment in the Kanye West series of ground breaking albums, targeting every school kid, from those that have dropped out (Debut Album, College Dropout), to those late registrants (sophmore album Late Registration), to those that have gone on and completed school (current album Graduation). Though technically this earmarks a junior year, West’s approach to crafting this album was very much senior. Kanye teams up with veterans Daft Punk and Edwin Birdsong on Stronger- Graduation’s forthcoming single; as well as enlisting a little help from current chart topper T-Pain on Good Life. Chris Martin of Coldplay appears on a track called HomeComing as well. Kanye has continued to prove his understanding and appreciation for a wide array of music and musical influences. What makes GRADUATION so special? Like most Kanye titles, his fearlessness and blindness to inhibiting boundaries, coupled with his fan driven core competence is evidence that he knows exactly what people yearn for…great music, perspective, and a voice to be heard.Kanye West’s third in a whimsical trilogy of “scholarly” albums, Graduation wears its predecessors’ badges of success on its sleeve. Matriculation has its rewards, apparently, and it’s time to take stock. Lyrically, there’s plenty of self-congratulation to attend to, but the real fun comes in the collabs, and West chooses co-conspirators like a kid in a candy store–John Legend (“Good Life”), Coldplay’s Chris Martin (“Homecoming”), Mos Def and the Section Quartet (both adorable choices for the foreboding “Drunk and Hot Girls”)–and plucks samples with A-list braggadocio: Elton John, Steely Dan, Daft Punk, Can, Michael Jackson, Public Enemy. Nothing here quite captures the superlative symbiosis of West’s past best beats (think “Gold Digger”), but the central motif remains: No one ever accused Kanye West of being too cool for school, and Graduation still knows how to party. True, Kanye West will happily whine about the pitfalls at the top of the heap, clear his throat and try to rhyme it with Barry Bonds, or diss fish in a barrel all day, but that can’t stop a shameless good time, and Graduation maintains an unshakeable knack for producing it. –Jason Kirk
