Sia Colour the Small One

This is the US debut from the voice behind Zero 7 and the soundtrack Six Feet Under: Everything Ends. CD features remixes from Four Teta and Ulrich Schnauss and b-sides exclusive to the US release.

The Bully

Includes ‘The Bully’ that was co-written with Beck. Astralwerks. 2006. Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you’ve just crept into someone’s bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia’s voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There’s certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener “Rewrite” works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while “Sunday” turns “Strawberry Fields” harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. “Sweet Potato” sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but “Bully”, a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. —Paul Tierney

Some People Have Real Problems by Sia

// August 5th, 2014 // 3 Comments » // Music, Sia

Some People Have Real Problems by Sia

2008 solo release from the vocalist best known for her work with Zero 7. Some People Have Real Problems is an upbeat and genre-defying collection that perfectly captures her powerful vocals and distinctive lyrics. 13 tracks including the first single ‘Day Too Soon’. After a smattering of success surrounding her inclusion in the Six Feet Under series finale with the song “Breathe Me,” and collaborations with electronic stars Massive Attack and Zero 7, Sia (Furler) returns with a pop record that’s witty and touching, alternately funny and achingly melancholy.

Shades of Fiona Apple cross with Joss Stone’s blue-eyed soul. Sia shines on a terrifically sung take on the Kinks’ (by way of the Pretenders cover) “I Go To Sleep” and her own deeply felt “Lentil.” Many of these songs shimmer with a radio-friendly gloss, but the show belongs to this eccentric Australian, who bravely subverts the accessible production through winking and sometimes sinister lyrics. Beck guests on the metaphor-packed “Academia,” book-ending lines like “you’re a difficult equation with a knack for heart evasion” with a mournful chorus that strips away the lyrical cleverness to plumb the broken-hearted depths of a ruined relationship.

Check your enhanced CD for a truly strange video for the hidden bonus track, “Buttons,” in which Sia distorts her face using a wide variety of objects, including scotch tape, fishnet hose, and a condom, to name a few.

If this playing with her own image is Sia’s warning shot across the bow of a popular music industry obsessed with the visual, it’ll make you think twice about what you’re seeing, but can’t distract from the intoxicating soundscape she delivers. –Ben Heege

Led Zeppelin DVD

Led Zeppelin DVD

Atlantic Records and Warner Strategic Marketing are proud to announce a landmark event in music history – the release of the mother lode of Led Zeppelin live recordings: Led Zeppelin DVD, a two-disc set. The DVD includes the few performances which were ever filmed during the band’s lifetime: London’s Royal Albert Hall, five-night run at London’s Earl Court, shows at England’s Knebworth Festival, and songs from New York’s Madison Square Garden.
The DVD Features include: Excerpts from Danish and French television performances, Australian television interviews with Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones, fan-shot bootleg performance of “Heartbreaker”, Behind the scenes footage of Knebworth, and an NBC interview with the band from 1970.

Track-list:
Disc 1
We’re Gonna Groove / I Can’t Quit You Babe / Dazed And Confused / White Summer / What Is And What Should Never Be / The Ocean / How Many More Times / Moby Dick / Whole Lotta Love / Communication Breakdown / C’mon Everybody / Something Else / Bring It On Home

Disc 2
Immigrant Song / Black Dog / Misty Mountain Hop / Since I’ve Been Loving You / Going To California / That’s The Way / Bron-Y-Aur Stomp / In My Time Of Dying / Trampled Underfoot / Stairway To Heaven / Rock And Roll / Nobody’s Fault But Mine / Sick Again / Achilles Last Stand / In The Evening / Kashmir / Whole Lotta LoveExclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.

Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings–some with missing visuals, some with missing audio–Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert–just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 “Immigrant Song” (Sydney, 1972) to “Black Dog” at MSG.

Highlights? It’s not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page’s violin bow work on “Dazed and Confused” in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. –Mark Walker

Britney

// March 10th, 2014 // 2 Comments » // Britney Spears, Music

Britney Spears ~ BritneyWhere Britney Spears’s first two albums hewed to the early-’60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler–a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway–her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single “I’m a Slave 4 U,” a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she’ll do anything you want as long as it’s dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears’s poses.

Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: “Overprotected,” “Let Me Be,” and a cover of “I Love Rock & Roll” that brings to mind its bubblegum roots. Even without the joyous disco tribute of “Anticipating” and the not-icky ballad “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” providing symbolic respite from the rest of this machine-tooled music, Britney is one of the most human discs of the current teen-pop boom. If it spins off the deserved string of radio/video smashes, it may even buy this superstar a second 15 minutes. –Rickey Wright
